Volunteer & Non Profit

Volunteer and non-profit organisations face unique challenges as there is no offer of remuneration to reward work. From a volunteer manager’s perspective it can be difficult to recruit, motivate and retain capable and committed volunteers. From a volunteer perspective, many protections under the Employment Relations Act 2000 and its 2018 amendment do not apply. Volunteer managers must still adhere to lawful processes and principles of good faith.

While the many of the legal protections paid employees enjoy do not apply, there are provisions under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 which must be respected by volunteer managers.

Much like businesses, the requirements, limitations and expectations on volunteer and non-profit are varied and diverse. For this reason, each organisation should apply policies to best meet their legal and ethical obligations and this is best achieved with a tailored approach.
